The AlzFighter Process: Category 2: Neuromotor exercises
"Use it or lose it."
We've all heard this phrase regarding maintaining our health and vitality. However, this concept also applies to the mind. One of the most effective methods to maintain cognitive function is to complete tasks that engage and work the mind in terms of comprehension, mental agility, and memory. An even greater strategy is to utilize a combination of mental and physical tasks. By incorporating both modalities, the brain is truly challenged. The result is a greater tendency to maintain the current level of cognitive function and even enhance it. The consistent utilization of neuro/motor and memory exercises has improved memory and brain functional connectivity (Silva et al., 2020, p. 16).
The benefits of these exercises include enhanced static and dynamic balance, coordination, gait, agility, and proprioception (awareness of the position and movement of the body).
Examples of neuromotor exercises
Yoga, yoga balance poses basic balance poses, and the utilization of balance balls with regular exercises such as squats, mini trampoline, or rebounder exercises. Assisted with closed basic balance poses with closed eyes, bicycling, dancing, and even walking.
Next Level neuromotor exercises incorporate simple mental tasks such as completing memory tasks, reading aloud, doing simple math problems, breathwork, and alternating hand movements.

Putting it into action: ( As always, remember to check with your provider before starting any exercise regimen.)
These are just a few examples of potential ways to combine the neuro and motor focus.
-Practice yoga balance poses while verbalizing the alphabet backward.
- Walk while also completing alternating hand motions, i.e., right hand with ring finger pointing and left hand with thumbs up. Alternate back and forth (Always be aware of surroundings and keep safety in mind)
- Use a mini trampoline/rebounder while reading out loud
