The WHY Behind AlzFighter.com
I don’t remember my grandmother well. When I last saw her, she was in the last stages of Alzheimer’s disease requiring 24/7 care. The disease had robbed her of everything. She couldn’t even make her needs known as her only spoken words had become either babbling or a repetition of the words “holy spirit”. Her condition terrified me. But I never thought that could be my fate in the future.
Fast forward 40 years. I am a Registered Nurse and I am watching my mother struggling with the same condition. She is my inspiration and a large part of why I chose to become a nurse. Thankfully preventative medications have slowed the progression of the disease as compared to my grandmother’s at the same age. My mother is well into her 90s and is able to ambulate and speak Spanish fluently still and understand English. Unfortunately, she did have to be placed in a memory care facility that is secured 24/7. Thankfully she is amazingly strong and with an unwavering positive mindset. She has adjusted well to her life and has been blessed with wonderful care givers.
This website is dedicated to her. She inspired me to become a registered nurse. I originally wanted to become a nurse practitioner and specialize in the geriatric population, however, over the years I changed my focus towards prevention. Throughout my nursing career, I advanced my education focusing in on cognitive function, disease processes, overall systemic health, and pathogenesis. The research gave me hope and highlighted two critical factors:
Cognitive decline is NOT a normal part of aging.
Prevention is possible when it comes to maintaining cognitive function!
